- I have a DecPC XL566 (pentium). It came with Win3.1 and a Sportster 14.4
- installed. I also have Video Accelerator Card and Sound Blaster. A few
- months ago I upgraded to Win95 everything worked fine. I recently bought
- a Sportster 28.8 and wanted to replace the 14.4. So the saga begins.
-
- I followed the directions to install with Plug and Play. This involved
- removing the jumpers and letting Win95 interact with the modem to determine
- the best port etc. This process also involved using Quicklinx II to test
- the modem and make some changes in System.ini. Well, nothing worked.
- Win95 couldn't detect the new hardware.
-
- I backed out of that installation, reinstalled the jumpers to the factory
- default of COM2 IRQ3 (this is the same as the 14.4 had been set) I
- reinstalled. Same result. Win95 couldn't detect new hardware. I then
- manually selected new hardware and selected the US Robotics Sportster 28.8
- driver. Everything looked okay but when I tried to use it, nothing.
- In diagnosing, Win95 still couldn't recognize and connect with this modem.
-
- I've looked at the I/O table and the IRQ table to verify that there are no
- conflicts. There are none showing. I reinstalled the 14.4 and it works fine.
-
- The last possible clue I came across is this. During my last help line call
- with the USR people the tech wanted me to SHUT DOWN Win95 selecting the
- RELOAD WITH MSDOS option. When I did this, and error message comes up saying
- C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd missing unable to load
- then it says OK TO TURN OFF COMPUTER and you have to power down.
- I can't get to MSDOS without Win95. I don't know if vmm32.vxd has anything
- to do with the modem. I'm grasping at straws at this point.
-
- All help appriciated
- Jon
